I have installed a map into the main memory using mapinstall. Is it possible to now move it from there to the SD card? I didn't see any option to install to the SD card in the first instance.

Gps Maps For Sd Card Recovery

  • If you used mapinstall then the option was on the Find Device screen although I agree, it's hard to find and use, if you have the card installed in the Nuvi. Personally I download the map update 'to computer only' and insert my SD card in a card reader, either in the computer or as a separate device. That way the card appears as a separate device on the Find Device screen in Mapinstall.
To move it to the card now I think you have 2 options:
    - use mapinstall to send the mapset to the SD card and move the gmapprom.img file off the Nuvi and once your sure everything is OK, delete it.
-- move the gmapprom.img file from the Nuvi to a folder on the SD card called Map. You may need to rename the file to something like City Navigator 2013.10.
  • Something strange is going on.
I installed the map from the pc to the unit using mapinstall. It said I had enough space and I didnt see an option to use the SD card. However, the map is larger than the remaning space in main memory.
I tried to find the map in the main memory and on the SD card expecting to see the map name but couldnt find it. At least part of it must have been on the SD card. Anyhow, I took a screen short of main memory .system, uninstalled the map again using napinstall. It took maybe 2 seconds where the install was in stages and took 15 or more minutes.
I compared the first .system files with the ones after uninstall and they were identical so the map must have been on the SD card somewhere.
I will reinstall it exactly as before and check the SD card thoroughly. I will look for the SD card option you suggest.
  • I need to step back a little.
I have just been told (popup), that there is a new map - Full Coverage of Europe (2013.10)
I have just bought the unit and it had the 2012 map on it when bought. I installed the new map after a lot of trouble getting it to download and with the help of Garmin tecs. The new map is called City Navigator Europe (Unicode) NT 2013.10.gmap and a copy was installed on the pc. That copy is 3.14gb.
Now my unit has only free space of 1.28 gb from its 8gb. Garmin said the new map installs over the old one so there is over 3gb unaccounted for (system?)
Mapinstall tells me I have City Navigator Europe NT 2012.4 and City Navigator Europe NTU 2013.1 installed. Are these the same area? If so can I remove the 2012.4 map?
As for the SD card, Winblows tells me I must format it but it already has the London City Map on it which is readable in the unit but not in an adaptor in the pc.
  • Ok, got the map on the SD card working ok.
Now just need to know if I can remove 1 map and how :D
  • Which map do you want to remove, London? Is it cityXplorer? Probably this is CNEU 2012.4 in Mapinstall and it should be grayed out. If you want to remove it, then delete its files from directory Map on nuvi or SD.
  • Mapinstall tells me I have City Navigator Europe NT 2012.4 and City Navigator Europe NTU 2013.1 installed in main memory. London City map is in the SD card.
It is the City Navigator Europe NT 2012.4 which should have been overwritten by the City Navigator Europe NTU 2013.1 should it not?
Btw I do not have a Map/ directory anywhere, including the .system folder.
These are the files I see (Not including the SD card):
  • Mapinstall doesn't distinguish between internal memory and SD. If London is on SD, then remove SD and check again.
  • There is an option to install to SD card in Mapinstall. It is easy to use and I used it to install a map to the SD card.
When the card is inserted or when the card is not inserted the files shown above remain. There appears to be some duplication and I want to remove the old map from internal memory to get back some of the 8gb I paid for.
It seems rather a waste if Garmin are going to use nearly half of it on a map I will never use because it has been upgraded.
  • Are you using recent Mapisntall 4.0.1? Then click at device on first screen and you will be able to read if there is '+ SD' note in nuvi description.
In your nuvi you have only single version of City Navigator with additional DEM and 3D buildings. No reason to remove anything.
Edit: just a note - full City Navigator Europe for nuvi can be over 6GB. Version on PC is only map, in device you have many more files: 3D, DEM, JVC, ASR, traffic trends, instasearch, premum POI, etc.
  • Yes I am using the lastest version of Mapinstall. Finding the SD option in not in question.
It was the apparent duplication of the maps I was concerned about. However, if you have checked what I have and think the 1.28gb I have left is correct and there is no duplication, then I am happy with that.
Thanks for your assistance. SD problem sorted :D
